Literacy at V.A.S.E Academy

Reading is promoted throughout VASE in many aspects. Reading is encouraged during form time alongside spellings. Reading is also a key aspect of every English lesson whether this is independent reading or group reading tasks.

Several activities are implemented to help promote reading for the students from celebrating world book day, hosting activities such as 'book club' during lunch hour or conducting student voice in what students like to read and focussing on implementing those reading materials from comic strips to exciting novels.
VASE academy is invested in promoting reading for all students to not only improve their reading ages but to gain interest and a love for reading. All pupils have access to read theory to improve their comprehension. Teachers can monitor and reward pupil progress.

To improve decoding skills for our weakest readers, who are reading below their chronological age, we employ a phonics curriculum led by trained staff within our learning support department.

Oxford Reading:
For our reading interventions we are using Oxford Reading. We use this reading scheme to help our pupils to close the age gap between their chronological age and their reading age. This reading scheme allows the pupil to move up in their reading to a higher stage, whilst gaining confidence and building up their reading skills. In connection with this, read, write inc phonics is used to teach pupils the sounds in English, the letters which represent them and how to form the letters when writing.

Rapid Plus:
Is another reading scheme we use with our pupils designed to help those readers who may struggle. This is used with our older pupils who have completed their oxford reading.

Numeracy at V.A.S.E Academy

What do we mean by numeracy?

Numeracy means understanding how maths is used in the real world and being able to apply it to make the best possible decisions.

It means being able to:

  • Interpret data, charts and diagrams
  • Process information
  • Solve problems
  • Check answers
  • Understand and explain solutions
  • Make decisions based on logical thinking and reasoning

Implementation of numeracy

Pupils take part in activities which address maths in the real world.

Pupils practise multiplications in form regularly and those who know their timetables are awarded.

Across the school, pupils will link numeracy to different subject areas, particular in animal care where data is collected from animal vivarium’s such as temperature, humidity and feeding. This data is then interpreted by pupils. Navigation skills, shapes, time dials are explored in outbound.

Numeracy for all…National Numeracy Challenge is a free online resource to help anyone improve their maths skills and, more importantly, confidence in maths.
